Fun in the Sun (times two)

Exciting News!

We were excited to see that two more chicks hatched overnight!  We made more scientific observations first thing this morning.

Scientific Method

We are using the scientific method to learn about the life cycle of chicks. We started with the question, "How long does it take for a fertilized egg to become a chick?" Students then made a hypothesis. We are making and recording daily scientific observations of fertilized eggs in an incubator. The eggs have been in the incubator for 19 days. So far one egg has hatched!

Animal Inquiry

Students choose an animal classification (bird, mammal, fish, amphibian, or reptile) to research and present to the class.  Each student is now using the inquiry process to learn more about one specific animal and how that animal affects and is affected by humans.  We are incorporating expository writing in our inquiry unit.  Students are excited about completing their "expert books" and going public with their learning.

MAP Testing

We have completed our spring MAP testing and are now back on our "regular" schedule.  Test results will be sent home as soon as they are available.  I am pleased with how hard all if the students worked while testing.

Japanese Culture

We have been learning about Japanese culture. Students used both print and digital resources to compare and contrast a typical day in a school in Japan with a typical day at Wilson. They also read about school lunches in Japan. We celebrated out learning by sampling sushi. Our sushi was made from sweets!

Achievement

Achievement: noun
a result brought about by effort

Room 314 is proud of our reading achievement. Students have been working very hard at using all of the reading and comprehension skills they have been learning during guided reading groups and shared reading lessons. Room 314 students earned an extra 15 minutes of computer free time and will keep the Achieve 3000 belt for another week for having the highest third grade class average on reading activities. Students in Mrs. Wilke's math group learned how to calculate the average (mean).

Happy Pi Day!

Pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter (the number of times the diameter will go around the circumference). It is about 3.14. Room 314 celebrated Pi Day by exploring circles and learning about radius and diameter. We ate pie and made a special announcement to the school at 3:14! Mrs. Wilke even wore a pi shirt.  March 14 is also the birthday of Albert Einstein and Waclaw Sierpinski so we read a book about Albert and attempted to build a Sierpinski triangle.

Are You Feeling Blue?

The purple reading group is reading a book called The Blues and wanted to write their own song!  Here is Morgan's idea.
                                                      Think About Music

When you're feeling down, you may want to cry weep or even eat.
When you're feeling wrong and you just want to kill the beat.
You need to think about MUSIC!  Listen with your ears.
You need to think about HAPPINESS!  Don't kill the beat you hear.
And if you can't find any happy in your life... think about music.
Your mom just yelled at you and you don't know what to do.
There's yelling going on in your head and its bothering you!
You need to think about MUSIC!  Listen with your ears.
You need to think about HAPPINESS!  Don't kill the beat you hear.
And if you can't find any happy in your life... think about music.
Yeh! Yeh!  Think about music!

Lullaby by Monica

When you are feeling sad and you are feeling blue and you need someone to help you... you need to listen to the blues it will inspire you... it's not abot being perfect and it's not always going to be worth it da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da its not about being perfect and its not always going to be worth it that is a NO NO!

Monica's Letter to Wilson

             Dear Wilson,

I appreciate all of the wonderful things you have done for me and my family.  You have brought my family closer together.  All of your Wilson family events have been a very exciting experience for me and my family.  I really appreciate the things you have done. This is the only school that appreciated me for who I am. This school really inspired me to be who I am, not somebody elese.  I really appreciate that this school has been there for me and I know someday someone out there will be there for this school.

                                                         Sincerely,
                                                                 Monica and her Family!!!

Family Literacy Night

Family Literacy Night was a huge success at Wilson. Students were so "egg"cited to see what hatched out of the egg while participating in a shared reading lesson. We decorated family eggs, told some egg jokes that really cracked us up, and enjoyed scrambled eggs and sausage. The "egg"cellent adventure will continue as families continue to read The Enormous Egg together at home. Please follow the at home reading schedule calendar that was sent home.
