Government Inquiry: How does local government affect our daily lives?

Students have been learning about local government. While exploring the departments and services of West Allis, students discovered that West Allis is considering building a skate park in the city. Students were very interested in how this would affect them. They researched skate parks, made lists of the pros and cons and wrote persuasive paragraphs about building a skate park in the city that were shared with the alderpersons.

Watermelon, seeds, funnels and writing

Students discovered that rather than writing about gigantic watermelon topics, they should focus on small moments or "seed" stories. We practiced putting large watermelon topics in funnels to change them into small moment "seeds."

Students used magnifying glasses to help them remember to zoom in to tell the most important parts of their small moment stories.

Writing from the Heart

Students discovered that the best stories come from the heart. One strategy for generating ideas for personal narrative writing is to to choose a strong emotion ( from the heart) and list particular moments you felt that emotion.
